PASSIVE FIRE PROTECTION
Protecta Firestopping Systems for Walls, Floors and Service Penetrations
Protecta is a passive fire protection range developed and manufactured by Polyseam Ltd, with a focus on tested systems for service penetrations, joints and openings in fire-resisting walls and floors. System selection depends on the supporting construction, the service passing through it, the aperture or annular gap and the fire performance required for the relevant application.
Depending on the tested detail, Protecta products such as FR Acrylic, FR Graphite, FR Board, pipe wraps, collars, putty products, EX Mortar and associated system components may need to be used together. The correct combination, installation arrangement and field of application should always be confirmed against current Protecta manufacturer documentation before installation.

APPLICATION GUIDANCE
Find Protecta Firestopping Products by Application
Protecta systems are selected according to the construction, service type, aperture or annular-gap condition and the tested arrangement. Different products may be relevant for very small annular gaps, conventional sealant details, large board seals or mortar systems, but the exact tested detail always controls.
The table summarises common application types and Protecta product families that may be relevant. It is general guidance only and is not a project specification.
Always verify the current Protecta installation instructions, ETA / UKTA documentation and tested system before installation.
| Application | Typical system requirement | Relevant Protecta products |
|---|---|---|
| Small annular gaps around services | A tested solution matched to the service, construction and available annular space. Very small gaps may require a putty or mechanical closure solution rather than assuming a conventional sealant depth can be achieved. | FR Putty Cord, FR Collar depending on the tested detail |
| Small service penetrations and linear joints | A tested sealant system with the specified seal depth, backing material, annular gap and supporting construction. | FR Acrylic |
| Combustible pipes and complex penetrations | An intumescent product selected for the pipe or service type, diameter, insulation, construction and tested configuration. | FR Graphite, FR Collar or FR Pipe Wrap depending on the tested detail |
| Large or mixed-service wall apertures | A tested board penetration-seal system matched to wall construction, aperture size and services. | FR Board with FR Acrylic and appropriate pipe wrap / collar / penetration products where required |
| Large floor openings and service risers | A tested mortar system installed to the correct thickness and combined with approved penetration components where required. | EX Mortar with FR Pipe Wrap or other approved Protecta system components where specified |
| Electrical socket boxes in plasterboard walls | A tested putty-pad arrangement matched to the wall and electrical box configuration. | FR Putty Pad for Electrical Sockets |
| Pipe penetrations requiring an intumescent wrap | A tested wrap arrangement matched to pipe material, insulation, construction and opening. | FR Pipe Wrap |
| FR Board pattress systems and exposed board surfaces | Use the coating only as part of the documented FR Board system and apply it in accordance with the relevant installation detail. | FR Coating with FR Board |
TECHNICAL RESOURCES
Protecta Tested Systems & Technical Resources
Protecta provides product documentation, installation guidance, tested-system information and digital tools to help contractors and specifiers identify appropriate passive fire protection solutions.
Protecta also provides technical handbook information covering firestopping of service penetrations. Always check the current manufacturer documentation for the exact construction, service and required fire performance.
TECHNICAL GUIDANCE
Protecta Tested Systems and Installation Guidance
Protecta firestopping products form tested systems. Changing the construction, service type, pipe or cable dimensions, insulation, opening size, annular gap, product combination, installation depth or orientation can affect whether the tested detail remains applicable.
- Identify the exact wall or floor construction and the service penetration.
- Record the opening dimensions, annular gap, service size and insulation arrangement where relevant.
- Select a Protecta tested system that matches the project condition and required E or EI classification.
- Install all products, backing materials, depths, fixings, separation distances and associated components exactly as required by the relevant detail.
- If the site condition does not match a documented solution, obtain appropriate technical guidance rather than modifying the system by assumption.
What Information Should I Provide?
For product guidance, it helps to provide the key construction, service and opening details for the application:
- Wall or floor construction
- Construction thickness
- Opening dimensions
- Annular gap
- Service type
- Pipe, cable or duct dimensions
- Pipe material
- Insulation type and thickness where relevant
- Required E / EI performance
- Existing Protecta system reference if known
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Protecta Fire Protection FAQs
Protecta products are used within tested passive fire protection systems to maintain fire compartmentation where walls and floors are penetrated by pipes, cables and other services, as well as for certain joints and openings. The appropriate system depends on the construction, service type, dimensions, annular gap and required fire performance.
FR Acrylic is a flexible fire-rated acrylic sealant used in tested penetration seals and linear-joint systems. FR Graphite is a higher-expansion intumescent sealant intended for tested service penetrations where greater expansion is required, including certain combustible pipes and complex services. The correct product should be selected from the applicable Protecta tested detail.
Protecta FR Board is used within tested penetration-seal systems to restore fire resistance where services pass through fire-rated walls and floors, including larger and mixed-service openings. Depending on the tested system it may be combined with Protecta sealants, pipe wraps, collars, coatings or other specified components.
Both products use intumescent technology to close openings created by combustible services during a fire, but they are installed differently and have different tested applications. FR Collar is a mechanically fixed collar installed around a penetration, while FR Pipe Wrap is installed around the pipe or combustible insulation as part of an approved wall or floor seal. Selection must follow the relevant tested Protecta system.
